The Forge in Sumner Street, London SE1, is an office development built by Landsec, located behind Tate Modern.
Inspired by Londons industrial past, The Forge offers 139,000 sq ft of Grade A office space. Located in the centre of vibrant Bankside, one of central London’s most creative, cultural and characterful areas. It has become a destination for its fantastic food and drink scene. Centred around the famous Borough Market, the area is packed with restaurants and bars for business lunches and alfresco after-work drinks. Bankside’s major role in the history of London is written large across its ancient, narrow streets. From its origins as a wealthy playground to its importance as a dock. Today, it is home to a rich offering of world-class culture, including famous landmarks, Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre with ample opportunities for inspiration and relaxation.
Designed by architects Piercy & Co and Bryden Wood, The Forge features two elegant buildings offering best-in-class sustainable office space set around a bright public courtyard in the heart of Southwark. Already an established area for businesses, this is a community where companies of all sizes and sectors come together to thrive.
The Forge is the UK’s first net zero carbon commercial building, constructed and operated in line with the UK’s Green Building Council’s (UKGBC) framework definition of net zero carbon buildings. The Forge is the world’s first large-scale office scheme built using a standardised “kit of parts”, an approach known as platform design for manufacture and assembly (P-DfMA). The structural steelwork, temporary works, cladding and on-floor MEP are all standardised at The Forge, based on a prototype created by client Landsec with their design partners Bryden Wood and manufacturing specialist Easi-Space.
Two office buildings, Bronze and Phosphor, benefit from a range of amenities including terraces on different levels, all focused around an internal courtyard. The Forge is committed to the wellbeing of its community. A public courtyard offers space and light, and terraces deliver inspirational views. Extensive cycle spaces and end-of-trip facilities support all journeys to the office to aid wellbeing. The Forge has carefully curated outdoor and indoor spaces to meet the wellbeing needs of a modern workspace: fresh air, sunlight, green spaces, end-of-trip facilities and extensive cycle spaces in a net zero carbon development. Terraces offer fantastic views and opportunities to reflect, connect and refresh.
